27 Where then is (A)boasting? It has been excluded. By (B)what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 [a]For (C)we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from works [b]of the Law. 29 Or (D)is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed (E)God (F)who will justify the [c]circumcised [d]by faith and the [e]uncircumcised through faith (G)is one.

31 Do we then nullify [f]the Law through faith? (H)Far from it! On the contrary, we (I)establish the Law.

Abraham’s Justification by Faith

What then shall we say that Abraham, [g]our forefather (J)according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified [h]by works, he has something to boast about; but (K)not [i]before God. For what does the Scripture say? “(L)Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who (M)works, the wages are not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but (N)believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

(O)Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven,
And whose sins have been covered.
(P)Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not (Q)take into account.”

Is this blessing then on [j](R)the circumcised, or on [k]the uncircumcised also? For (S)we say, “(T)Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.” 10 How then was it credited? While he was [l]circumcised, or [m]uncircumcised? Not while [n]circumcised, but while [o]uncircumcised; 11 and he (U)received the sign of circumcision, (V)a seal of the righteousness of the faith which [p]he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be (W)the father of (X)all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which [q]he had while uncircumcised.

13 For (Y)the promise to Abraham or to his [r]descendants (Z)that he would be heir of the world was not [s]through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For (AA)if those who are [t]of the Law are heirs, then faith is made void and the promise is nullified; 15 for (AB)the Law brings about wrath, but (AC)where there is no law, there also is no violation.

16 For this reason it is [u]by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with (AD)grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to (AE)all the [v]descendants, not only to [w]those who are of the Law, but also to [x](AF)those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is (AG)the father of us all, 17 (as it is written: “I have made you (AH)a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, that is, God, (AI)who gives life to the dead and (AJ)calls into being (AK)things that do not exist.
